Biography

Abílio Couto was a Brazilian marathon swimmer whose achievements helped establish open-water swimming as an organised sport in his home country. Born in 1924, he competed internationally and later helped create Brazil’s first national open-water championships and the Ilhabela–Caraguatatuba event.

His English Channel ambitions initially met repeated setbacks. Four attempts in 1957 ended or were cancelled amid cold, navigation problems and bad weather. He returned the next year after selling possessions to finance the trip. On 10 August 1958 he completed the France-to-England crossing in 12 hours and 45 minutes, supported by his Argentine coach Miguel Maciel. Fog, passing ships and opposing tides made the final approach difficult.

Couto returned for two successful swims in 1959. His England-to-France time of 12 hours and 49 minutes established a directional speed record, while his other crossing took 11 hours and 33 minutes. His wider career included Gibraltar, Lake Michigan, the Suez Canal and the Nile, alongside international long-distance races.

After his death in 1998, Couto entered the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame’s class of 2001. His family represented him at the following year’s ceremony and donated his Channel record trophy, preserving a tangible link to the achievement.
