Choosing a road marathon in United Kingdom
Choose the course before chasing the calendar
London’s city streets and the roads beside Loch Ness make very different days out. Start with the course profile, then look at how you reach the start and get home from the finish. A flat-looking map is only half the story: bridges, exposed stretches and a late climb can all change the way a marathon feels. The route links in each guide are the place to settle those details.
Have an entry plan as well as a training plan
Compare the entry routes before choosing your favourite Sunday. A ballot, a qualifying place and a charity entry come with different conditions; a confirmed race date does not mean general entry is open. If your first choice depends on a ballot, use the county directory to find another race you would actually enjoy running. The consolation prize need not be another spreadsheet.
Browse by county / area
Find a race in your area, or compare the options for a trip. Routes may cross regional boundaries.

How can I compare road marathon courses in the United Kingdom?
Use the course summaries to compare terrain, surface and start-to-finish arrangements, then open the individual guide for official maps. A net-downhill course is not necessarily flat, and a road race may include paved paths or a track finish. Check the receiving event’s rules if you need a qualifying time.
Are the approximate fields the number of people who entered?
Each figure states its basis and year. Entrants, starters and finishers are different counts; a previous finishing field is a guide to scale, not an entry total or a guaranteed future field. Figures are approximate, and Unknown means a reliable estimate is not available. They are not multi-year averages unless explicitly described that way.
Where can I find past race and category results?
Each race guide links to the organiser’s results. Choose the correct distance and edition to find a runner or published category standings.
