Three runners, one first: Herne Hill women claim national relay gold

Lucy Jones, Sophie Tooley and Katie Snowden combined for Herne Hill Harriers' first senior women's English National Cross Country Relay title in Mansfield.

A relay trophy records a club's name. Winning it takes three athletes whose contributions fit together. At Mansfield on Saturday 31 October, Lucy Jones, Sophie Tooley and Katie Snowden produced the combination that made Herne Hill Harriers senior women's national champions for the first time.

The opening stage left Herne Hill third. Jones, the reigning national cross-country champion, put her club within reach before Tooley moved the team into the lead. Snowden completed the job on the final leg, bringing them home in 28:43 for the 3 x 3km race at Berry Hill Park.

A title built across three legs

For Snowden, the victory carried a connection stretching far beyond one afternoon. Herne Hill marked 20 years since she joined the club, in a year also marking half a century since women were first admitted. A first national senior women's cross-country relay title gave that history a new milestone.

The team behind them brought a strong record of its own. Belgrave Harriers arrived as winners of the previous three editions. Nancie Bowley, Kitty Shepherd-Cross and Abbey Brooke combined for 29:34 to take silver, 51 seconds behind Herne Hill. Aldershot, Farnham & District secured bronze in 29:41, seven seconds further back.

A strong podium and a new mixed relay

Those small details matter in a relay. The final podium records the total, while the leg order shows how athletes turn individual efforts into one result. Herne Hill's three stages delivered position, a change of lead and the finish needed to turn a challenge into a championship.

It was a rewarding day elsewhere for Belgrave too. The club took another silver in the new mixed relay, where Simon Coppard, Alex Barbour, Sam Sommerville and Juliet Hodder finished in 20:22. Cambridge & Coleridge won that event in 19:33, with Sale Harriers third in 20:26. The mixed race gave the meeting another way to celebrate teams built across the club.

For the senior women, the headline belongs to Jones, Tooley and Snowden. Their names now sit together beside a first for Herne Hill. That is one of club running's most satisfying achievements: separate training histories and separate races combining for a result every teammate can share.

Congratulations to the champions, the medallists and the clubs who brought their teams to Mansfield.
