Biography

Ernst Vierkötter of Cologne took up the family bakery after his father died. On 30 August 1926 he became the fastest swimmer to cross the English Channel. His registered time of 12 hours 38 minutes lowered Gertrude Ederle’s mark by 2 hours 1 minute. Georges Michel swam faster the following month.

The Channel registers list a solo crossing from France to England. Captain Salmon piloted the escort vessel Europe. The historical register gives clocks of 13:32 and 02:10, while contemporary German reporting describes an early-morning departure and an afternoon finish. Exact local clock times remain unresolved.

The following summer Vierkötter won the Canadian National Exhibition’s 21-mile Lake Ontario swim. The organiser’s historical table gives 11 hours 45 minutes. A race-day report says the announced time was corrected to 11 hours 42 minutes 12 seconds. He settled in Toronto and later taught swimming and officiated at the exhibition.

Cold water stopped every starter in the 1928 men’s race. Vierkötter covered 12 of the 15 miles in 7:39:37 and shared in the prize money. He completed the 15 miles the next year, finishing second in 8:31:39.3. In 1930 he placed fifth in 8:30:10.4.

The recorded nationality is Germany.
