Biography

Edward “Ted” Keenan trained on Lough Erne and off Bundoran. In August 1972 the 37-year-old from Enniskillen set out from Shakespeare Beach, Dover, with his son Brian aboard the escort boat. A tide change near Cap Gris-Nez carried his swim on towards Sangatte, where he came ashore the next morning.

A year later Keenan swam from Orlock Point in Northern Ireland to the Scottish coast in 18 hours 27 minutes. He completed the Original Triple Crown in July 1975 when he reached Coney Beach in Porthcawl after crossing the Bristol Channel. Brian accompanied his father on all three swims.
