Biography

Ethel ‘Sunny’ Lowry combined Channel swimming with a long career supporting other swimmers. Her early marathon experience included Windermere and Colwyn Bay, followed by training with Jabez Wolffe. Dover Museum describes her selection from a large group of applicants and her preparation on the Kent coast. She made unsuccessful Channel attempts in 1932 and earlier in 1933 before completing the crossing that August.

The surviving museum transcription of the witnesses’ affidavit places her departure at Cap Gris Nez on the evening of 28 August and her arrival at St Margaret’s Bay the following morning. The CSA records 15 hours 41 minutes. She wore a two-piece costume, preserved by Dover Museum, that allowed greater movement than the heavier one-piece clothing promoted for women.

Recognition did not arrive immediately: the museum records CSA acceptance in March 1958. Lowry later became a founding member of the British Long Distance Swimming Association and served as CSA president from 2000 to 2007. Her crossing remains firmly documented, although museum captions disagree over its date and one exhibit gives a different duration. This profile follows the affidavit dates and CSA time while retaining those differences alongside the performance.
