Biography

Samantha Druce is an English Channel swimmer whose 1983 crossing became the youngest-female record. Born on 22 April 1971, she swam for Poole Swimming Club and prepared with Channel coach Tom Watch. Watch later recalled that she contacted him in February to ask for help and was eager to attempt the crossing. He remembered a determined trainee who sometimes needed persuading to leave the water.

On 18 August 1983, at twelve years and 118 days old, Druce completed an England-to-France solo. The Channel Swimming Association and Guinness record 15 hours 27 minutes; Poole’s history prints 15 hours 26 minutes. The federation’s historical entry names Fred Mardle as pilot, Pierre Nelly as the escort boat and J. Comben as observer. Her Poole teammate Marc Newman accompanied her as a companion swimmer. Watch recalled worsening weather toward the finish.

Druce displaced Jacqui Hampson’s youngest-female mark and received the CSA’s youngest successful swimmer award for 1983. Guinness retains her achievement as a historical record that cannot now be attempted under its minimum age of sixteen. Her story connects a junior club swimmer’s ambition with the coaching, piloting and companionship behind a Channel crossing.
