Biography

Nathalie Pohl is a German open-water swimmer born in Marburg an der Lahn on 13 October 1994. She began swimming lessons at five. At eighteen, rereading a childhood book about a woman who crossed the English Channel helped turn a familiar story into a personal goal. Her first open-water swim came in June 2014, when she crossed the width of Lake Constance.

The Channel required another stage of preparation. An attempt in 2015 ended when her coach stopped the swim. Pohl’s account of the following year describes more intensive physical and mental training, a departure in darkness and demanding currents during the final hours. The CS&PF records her successful England-to-France crossing on 21 September 2016 in 11 hours 10 minutes, escorted by Eddie Spelling aboard Mighty Mo.

In July 2026 she returned as part of an international four-woman relay with Mariam Binladen, Mariana Moura Santos and Jasmine Harrison. The project marked the centenary of Gertrude Ederle’s crossing and supported children learning to swim through Swim for Kids. Its published 11-hour-28-minute result belongs to the whole team. The CSA describes this later crossing as a Special Category Swim; it is presented separately from Pohl’s solo achievement.
