Biography

Mariel Hawley is a Mexican marathon swimmer, lawyer, author and speaker whose sporting projects have also supported children’s medical care. In her first-person account, she describes discovering sea swimming as a child while visiting Acapulco with her grandparents. She competed in pools as she grew up and returned to sustained open-water training after becoming a mother. A five-kilometre event in 2001 encouraged her to seek longer swims.

Her early English Channel experience came with Sport City Mexico, a six-person team that completed four consecutive crossings. That relay encouraged her to pursue a solo. On 12 August 2011 she completed the England-to-France crossing in a published 14 hours 33 minutes, accompanied by Mike Oram aboard Gallivant. Dover’s individual account places her landing at Sangatte. Together with Manhattan and Catalina swims, this completed her Triple Crown programme in 2012.

Hawley went on to complete the Oceans Seven in March 2019. Her professional biography identifies a law degree from Universidad Iberoamericana and the books Días Azules and Corazón de Mar. Through the Quiero Sonreír project, she has connected swimming with support for children needing cleft-lip and palate surgery or cancer treatment. Her public speaking brings together these experiences of sport, family life and work for others, giving her profile a scope beyond crossing times alone.
