Biography

Eileen Fenton combined an international swimming achievement with decades of work helping other people swim. A schoolteacher from Dewsbury, she was supported by her Yorkshire community when she entered the first Daily Mail Channel race in 1950. Her distance-swimming experience already included Morecambe Bay: a Dover Museum photograph records her finishing second there in 1948, in three hours and 44 minutes.

On 22 August 1950, Fenton joined the race from France to England. Nine of the 24 entrants finished. She reached Shakespeare Beach as the first woman home, with an elapsed time of 15 hours and 31 minutes, and received the women’s £1,000 prize. The museum preserves a photograph of her exhausted arrival, while the Channel Swimming Association maintains her successful swim entry.

Her subsequent contribution extended well beyond that finish. She coached at Dewsbury Swimming Club and helped develop both sprint and long-distance swimmers, including Jean Oldroyd and Wendy Brook. She also supported the British Long Distance Swimming Association as a committee member and vice-president. An MBE in 2019 recognised her voluntary service to swimming. The CSA’s memorial account in August 2026 emphasised that teaching and mentorship alongside her place in Channel history.

How this record was checked

CSA individual entry 2250 confirms the successful one-way route and 15:31. Dover Museum’s race history and landing photograph d17661 establish 22 August 1950, the start and finish places, and women’s victory. No original observer manuscript was inspected. CS&PF historical row 442841 adds crew and clock details, but its Butlins comment conflicts with the primary historical race identification; that comment is not adopted.
