Biography

Doreen Miller, widely known as Dori, is an American Channel swimmer whose endurance career continued after she moved to Australia. Her New England Masters Hall of Fame profile traces her swimming to age eleven in New Haven, Connecticut, followed by an athletic scholarship to the University of Maryland. She moved to Sydney in 2009 and joined Bondi Surf Club the following year.

Miller’s Channel record includes one-way swims in 2008, 2010 and 2012. The 2012 effort illustrates the difference between crossing the Channel and completing a double: she reached France in 11 hours 45 minutes 15 seconds, then attempted a return that ended unsuccessfully after a further 8 hours 57 minutes 45 seconds.

In 2014 she completed the double with pilot Lance Oram aboard Sea Satin. Her outward leg took 12 hours 8 minutes and the return 14 hours 13 minutes, totalling 26 hours 21 minutes. The historical register dates the swim to 4 August, the annual table to 5 August, and a separate summary to 4/5 August. The Hall of Fame’s stray reference to 2016 conflicts with its own list and the federation’s 2014 season review.

Her later recognition included New South Wales’s Masters surf-lifesaving athlete award in 2014, a national Masters Legend honour in 2022 and New England Masters Hall of Fame recognition in 2023.
