One name, two champions: meet the Sheila Chepkiruis winning on the roads

Valencia and New York had winners with the same name seven days apart. Their achievements belong to two different Kenyan athletes.
Same name. Same flag. Two very different routes to a finish line. Across seven days, two Kenyan athletes named Sheila Chepkirui won major road races — one in Valencia, the other in New York.
The shared name makes an arresting headline. The performances deserve an introduction of their own, because each belongs to a separate athlete and a separate career.
Valencia: one second makes the difference
In Valencia on 25 October, the Sheila Chepkirui born on 12 April 1997 won the half marathon in 1:03:51. Diana Wanza followed one second later, with Daisilah Jerono third in 1:04:11. For all the attention the winning time commands, that one-second margin shows how little room there was to relax at the end.
Her athlete record lists the Valencia performance as her half-marathon personal best. It also includes a 30:41 road 10K in April and 51:21 for 10 miles in September. Read together, those results give the half-marathon victory a place in a wider season rather than leaving it as an isolated headline.
The Valencia race had demanded sustained speed well before the finish. Chepkirui, Wanza and Jerono reached 15 kilometres together in 45:31, with a 24-second gap to the next runners. By 20 kilometres, Chepkirui and Wanza were still together in 1:00:30 and Jerono was seven seconds behind. Chepkirui then had to turn that position into victory with Wanza still close enough to challenge.
The winning time was also the fastest women’s half-marathon performance of 2026 at the time of the race, according to the governing body’s report. Wanza left Valencia with a personal best too. The finish therefore offers more than the name at the top: it records two athletes taking their half-marathon running to a new level in the same contest. Jerono completed a Kenyan sweep of the podium, making the women’s race a particularly successful day for the country.
New York: a champion returns
Seven days later, New York's title went to Sheila Chepkirui, born on 27 December 1990. Her 2:24:36 restored the crown she first won in 2024. Behind her, Jess McClain and Hellen Obiri contested the remaining podium places, with McClain taking second. It was Chepkirui's second New York victory in three years.
New York's champion had already won the Nagoya Women's Marathon in March in 2:21:54, following her 2025 victory there. Her record also holds a connection with Valencia: her marathon debut in the Spanish city in 2022 brought second place and a personal best of 2:17:29.
Two careers worth celebrating
That connection is a neat twist, but it is not a reason to combine the records. The half-marathon winner in Valencia this October and the marathon winner in New York this November are different women. Their birth dates and individual athlete records make the distinction clear.
For AthRecs, celebrating an athlete starts with giving her the right achievements. Both victories are worth remembering: a half-marathon best secured by a second in Spain, and a second New York title earned a week later. Two champions, two careers and plenty of reasons to learn both names.
