Košice Marathon 2026: archived pre-race field notes
Košice’s 4 October marathon has finished. These notes preserve the organiser’s announced field and earlier credentials of Moses Kipngetich Kemei, Balemelay Shumet Kebede and their proposed challengers.
From the archive: first published on 30 October 2026. These notes were prepared before the 3–4 October race weekend and updated on 5 October. They preserve the pre-race view; the races are now past.
Status checked 5 October 2026: the organiser has published the winners of the 4 October marathon. These notes were drafted before the race and retain the announced field and earlier form, rather than confirmed starters or 2026 results.
Moses Kipngetich Kemei was announced as returning champion. His 2025 victory set the men’s course record at 2:06:47. Kaan Kigen Özbilen’s listed 2:04:16 best and Timothy Kibet Misoi’s 2:06:07 in Hamburg this year supplied two other reasons for pre-race interest: exceptional career speed and current season form.
Balemelay Shumet Kebede was announced after winning the women’s race in 2025 in 2:21:59. Jackline Chelal’s 2:20:29 best made her an obvious name in the pre-race assessment. Gojjam Tsegaye Enyew, whose record included 2:24:02 in Barcelona, added another contender in the organiser’s guide.
Our leading pre-race pairings were Kemei against Özbilen, and Kebede against Chelal, with Misoi especially interesting on recent form. That was an editorial assessment of the organiser’s announced field, not confirmation that each athlete started or a description of the finishing order.
The interest lay in how the contenders might respond once the pace began to bite. Earlier achievements explained their billing, but the result could only be established on race day. The organiser’s post-race report now provides that separate account.
