Indianapolis Monumental Marathon 2026: four course records and a one-second women's finish
By AthRecs Editorial · 3 min read
Johnnie Guy returned to Indianapolis and cut nearly five minutes from his 2025 time. Lindsey Bradley had one second to spare. The 2026 programme produced four course records across three distances.
A year ago, Johnnie Guy finished seventh at the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon in 2:16:43. On Saturday 7 November 2026, he crossed first in 2:11:47 and erased the men's course record. The improvement did not happen on a results sheet: it happened on the same city roads on which he had raced the previous year.
The women's finish was even tighter. Lindsey Bradley, who had won the 2024 edition, returned for a second marathon title and a new 2:29:47 course record. Isabel Hebner finished one second behind in 2:29:48, one of those margins that makes the time and the placing equally memorable.
Indianapolis did not stop there. Owen Smith ran 1:01:42 in the half marathon, and Rebecca Schmitt won the women's 5K in 15:56. According to the organisers, both were course records. Four different performances across the weekend deserved that recognition.
Guy and Bradley rewrite the marathon record books
Guy ran 2:11:47, beating the previous men's course record of 2:12:29. Cameron Dickson took second in 2:13:16, and Kobe Blanco third in 2:14:12. Guy's effort was a dramatic improvement over his 2025 seventh-place finish.
Bradley had set the women's course record when winning in 2024 with 2:31:49. This time she finished in 2:29:47, with Isabel Hebner an agonisingly close second in 2:29:48 and Melissa Berry third in 2:31:40. Celebrating the champion should never come at the expense of recognising an outstanding runner-up.
The organisers reported 28 qualifiers for the 2028 US Olympic Marathon Trials, more than double the 13 achieved in 2025. That detail gives the racing further depth: dozens of athletes were chasing standards just as meaningful to their own careers as the podium positions.

A half-marathon record and 5K champions
The men's half-marathon podium was led by Owen Smith's 1:01:42 course record. Matt Richtman was just six seconds behind in 1:01:48, with Noah Fisher third in 1:02:04. The organisers reported seven men beating the old 1:02:25 course record, an indication of the quality of the field.
Mikayla Reed won the women's half in 1:08:51; Marisa Howard finished in 1:09:27 and Jessica Gockley-Day in 1:09:51. Their places deserve their own clear half-marathon classification, rather than being tucked into the marathon record summary.
In the 5K, Lance Sobaski won the men's event in 14:28. Rebecca Schmitt won the women's race in a course-record 15:56, improving the previous mark of 16:03. The organisers also reported 18,000 registrations across the programme, a total that should not be misrepresented as finishers.

The history behind the records
Guy's 2025 Monumental Marathon was a top-ten finish, but a year later he was a course-record champion. Bradley's 2024 win and 2026 return create a different pattern: the same runner setting the standard twice and doing so with an extraordinary rival on her shoulder.
Smith and Schmitt showed why a multi-distance race deserves more than a single marathon headline. Every distance has its champions. Full age-division and wheelchair classifications should be reviewed against the event's official timing before further awards are added.
