Two seconds in Hamburg: Noble and Wietrzyk start HYROX Elite Series with gold

By AthRecs Editorial · 3 min read

Sean Noble edged Luke Greer in the men's race, while Joanna Wietrzyk led the women's podium as the new Elite Series began in Hamburg.

According to BOXROX’s reporting from Hamburg, the men's HYROX Elite 15 race came down to a handful of seconds after eight runs and eight workout stations. Ireland's Sean Noble won in a reported 53:19 on Friday 30 October, with Luke Greer two seconds behind in 53:21. It was a close opening to the 2026/27 Elite Series.

Noble and Greer reached the final wall-ball station with the race still alive. BOXROX's live report described the pair trading the advantage through the closing repetitions before Noble completed the work and crossed first. The result rewarded an athlete who had stayed in the fight through every change from running to strength work.

The contest for the final podium place was almost as tight. The Netherlands' Hidde Weersma finished third in 53:41, three seconds ahead of Canada's Cole Learn. Those are small margins after nearly an hour of racing, and they gave the closing stages two separate battles worth following.

Australia's Joanna Wietrzyk took the women's title in 56:10. Americans Lauren Weeks and Vivian Tafuto completed the podium in 56:24 and 57:55. Wietrzyk therefore finished 14 seconds clear of Weeks on the published whole-second times, with Tafuto securing the third step in a field containing some of the sport's leading names.

Hamburg carried an extra reward for those six podium athletes. The Elite Series qualification format sends the top three from each Elite race to the 2027 World Championships in Hong Kong. A strong October performance could therefore settle a major season objective well before the next calendar year begins.

For anyone watching HYROX for the first time, the challenge is easy to describe and demanding to complete: run one kilometre, tackle a functional workout station, and repeat until all eight runs and eight stations are done. The stations include the sled push, sled pull, rowing, farmers carry, sandbag lunges and the final wall balls.

That constant change is what makes the finish compelling. A runner's lead must survive the next station; strength must be carried back onto the running course. Hamburg's singles races offered a clear example of both demands, with athletes having to keep earning their position right to the line.

There was another route into the next Elite field through the new Challenger 15 competition. Jannik Czapla and Stefanie Oswald won the men's and women's races respectively, earning invitations to step up to the Elite 15 in London. Their wins add two more achievements to take from the opening weekend.

The Elite Series now moves to London on 3–4 December. For Noble and Wietrzyk, the opening statement is already on the board: first place in Hamburg, and a season launched with gold. For the athletes immediately behind them, the narrow gaps give the next meeting an appealing edge.

After London, the published Elite Series calendar continues in Bangkok on 11–12 February, Las Vegas on 12–13 March and Lyon on 13–14 May 2027. Each meeting offers another chance to qualify for Hong Kong. Hamburg supplied the first answers, but the season still has room for new winners and the next breakthrough.
