Greece running round-up: Athens records and outstanding home performances
By AthRecs Editorial · 3 min read
Athens gave its ancient stadium new records in 2026, but home runners Konstantinos Stamoulis and Stamatia Noula had their own reason to celebrate.
Thousands of runners travelled the famous route from Marathon to Athens on Sunday, but the leading Greek performances offered a particularly compelling home-country story. Konstantinos Stamoulis finished eighth overall and first Greek man in 2:17:37. Stamatia Noula was the first Greek woman in a time of 2:35:13, sixth in the women's race and the fastest Greek women's performance recorded on the historic course.
Around them, the international race reached extraordinary heights. Ethiopia's Manazot Siyum Taferi broke the men's course record in 2:10:03, and Yatane Kormoshe Dusha improved the women's event record to 2:30:04. Those achievements did not diminish the national performances; they showed the strength of the company in which the leading Greeks raced.
The 10K programme also delivered Greek winners and a different kind of success. Recognising that breadth — world-class elite, national representative, masters runner or newcomer — is what gives an event report meaning beyond the leading stopwatch.
Greek runners shine amid international records
Stamoulis's 2:17:37 followed seven athletes home, with Ethiopian record-holder Taferi setting the pace at the front. Charalampos Pitsolis and Nikolaos Stamoulis also reached the men's top ten with 2:18:58 and 2:19:05 in published leading results.
Noula's 2:35:13 was especially meaningful: she surpassed the Greek women's historic-route best associated with Maria Polyzou. Athanasia Kokkorou followed in 2:36:28 according to a race-day leading classification, with Dafni-Eftychia Lavasa another Greek athlete in the top ten.
The women's overall contest was won by Dusha in 2:30:04, ahead of fellow Ethiopian Tsiyon Abebe Temesgen (2:30:29) and American Jane Jepkemboi Bareikis (2:32:59). Greece's leading finishers competed in a deep international field and deserve their own recognition.

The 10K brings more Greek titles
Panagiotis Petroulakis won the men's Athens 10K in 29:40. Anastasia Marinakou took the women's event in 33:07, continuing an impressive record at the distance. These are separate race results, not categories of the marathon.
On a course and in a city with such a visible history, the big stories are not limited to professionals. The official age-category classifications still require checking before particular category champions can be named, especially where only live provisional figures are available.
AthRecs will keep the race distances and category results clearly separated, crediting the timing provider and attaching verified performances to the correct athletes rather than treating identical names as the same person.
