Two Olympic marathon gold medals, two official world records, 11 World Marathon Major victories and an extraordinary 1:59:40 in Vienna. On his 42nd birthday, AthRecs celebrates the athlete who changed how runners think about the possible.

Happy birthday to Eliud Kipchoge. Born on 5 November 1984 in Kenya, the marathon great turns 42 today, 5 November 2026. He has achieved something rarer than a long list of victories: he has changed the language of running. His belief that 'No human is limited' speaks to runners who will never share his pace, yet recognise the value of patience, preparation and trying again.

Kipchoge's greatness did not begin on the roads. In 2003, aged 18, he won the world 5000m title in Paris against an exceptional field. He won Olympic bronze over 5000m in Athens in 2004 and silver in Beijing in 2008. The move to the marathon in 2013 unlocked a remarkable second career.

The headline number is 2:01:09. On 25 September 2022 in Berlin, Kipchoge lowered his own official men's marathon world record by 30 seconds. It remains his personal best. The achievement was not merely speed: he ran the opening half in 59:50 before managing a demanding second half to win in Berlin.

Eliud Kipchoge's greatest marathon moments

His first marathon, Hamburg 2013, was a victory in 2:05:30. He followed with a second place in Berlin later that year, then won Chicago in 2014 and embarked on a run of major victories that made him the defining marathoner of his generation.

At the Rio 2016 Olympic Games he won the men's marathon in 2:08:44. At the postponed Tokyo 2020 Olympics, held in Sapporo in August 2021, he defended his title in 2:08:38. Only a select few runners have won consecutive Olympic marathon crowns.

Berlin brought two official world records: 2:01:39 in September 2018 and 2:01:09 in September 2022. The second record has since been surpassed, but his own PB remains 2:01:09.

Then came Vienna on 12 October 2019. At the INEOS 1:59 Challenge, Kipchoge completed the marathon distance in 1:59:40.2. It was the first sub-two-hour marathon-distance run, although the controlled pacing and other conditions meant it was not eligible as an official world record.

A career measured by more than winning

Eleven World Marathon Major wins tell part of the story: five in Berlin, four in London, one in Chicago and one in Tokyo. There were setbacks too, including a difficult 2024 Olympic marathon in Paris, where he did not finish. His later starts demonstrate a willingness to keep competing beyond the years when many champions would have quietly retired.

His disciplined life and modest public manner are central to the story. In an interview with the BBC he said, 'The most important thing to me is inspiration, not fame.' That is a useful birthday message for everybody who runs before work, tackles a first 5K, or hopes to reach the finish line of a marathon.

On a day celebrating the fastest, it is worth celebrating consistency, humility and respect for the work. Kipchoge has helped make those qualities part of the global running conversation.
