The big race weekend: Boston’s three-peat chase, Athens history and an IRONMAN showdown

By AthRecs Editorial · 10 min read

A champion chasing a Boston first. A trio of Greek runners racing history. A Danish triathlete returning to the deep end. Across nine big races this weekend, the names on the start lists tell more than one story.

On Saturday morning in Panama City Beach, professionals and age-groupers will head into the Gulf for an IRONMAN. At almost the same time, runners in Indianapolis will set out over 26.2 miles. By Sunday, the racing stretches from the hills of Athens to the roads of Boston, Porto, Málaga, Ravenna and the French Riviera. For the professionals, there are titles, records and qualifying slots. For everyone else, an equally serious business: trying to finish what they trained for.

The standout names are not predictions of finishers. These are announced or published entries as checked on 5 November 2026, and fields can change right up to race day. AthRecs links the athletes we can distinguish reliably to their existing or newly created profiles, then adds results only when source and identity checks support them.

What time do the weekend's big races start?

All times below are in the location of each race, not UK time. The published time may be the first gun rather than an athlete's own assigned wave. Start lists and weather forecasts can change: check the official organiser information before travelling.

Boston Half: can Fentaye Belayneh win three in a row?

Fentaye Belayneh is attempting something no woman has achieved at this event: three consecutive Boston Half titles. The Ethiopian won in 2024 and 2025, then went to Houston in January 2026 and clocked 1:04:49 to win. The Boston Athletic Association has put her back on its professional list, but Germany’s Melat Kejeta (1:05:18 PB), Ethiopia’s Sentayehu Lewetegn (1:06:58) and American Sara Hall (1:07:15) give her plenty to think about. Emily Durgin, Vibian Chepkirui and Mercy Cherono are also entered.

On the men’s side, 2023 Boston Half winner Abel Kipchumba brings a listed 58:07 PB. Habtom Samuel debuted over the half marathon in Houston this January and won in 59:01, setting a course record. Andrea Kiptoo (59:11) and Mohammed El Youssfi (59:21) add more sub-hour speed. The wheelchair and para fields are headline races in their own right: Daniel Romanchuk, defending champions Miguel Jimenez-Vergara and Yen Hoang, and other competitors have their own ambitions. The B.A.A. expects around 9,000 entrants on an Emerald Necklace course starting and finishing at Franklin Park.

The race begins Sunday 8 November at 08:00 Boston local time. Athletes should check their B.A.A. wave, bib pickup and course-day communications rather than relying on somebody else’s screenshots of a schedule.

The updated Boston Half is a rolling out-and-back course around Franklin Park and the Emerald Necklace, with a late uphill section on Circuit Drive. Cool, sunny conditions are currently forecast for Sunday morning in the Boston area; nevertheless runners should check the B.A.A. event flag system on race morning and arrive prepared with removable warm layers. Official course aid offers water and Gatorade Endurance, with Maurten also listed. The capacity to run hills economically in cool conditions is part of what makes contenders such as Belayneh, Samuel and Hall formidable.

IRONMAN Florida: a long day, a crowded professional field and Kona on the line

Magnus Ditlev arrives on the published field with a reputation built at Challenge Roth, where he won three times in succession and ran 7:23:24 in 2024. He is joined on the men’s entry list by Sam Long, Cam Wurf, Matt Hanson, Ben Kanute and Rudy von Berg. Ditlev’s long-course speed makes him a fascinating name, although his own results history is a reminder that nothing is settled until the marathon is finished.

The women’s list includes Holly Lawrence and Switzerland’s Alanis Siffert, winner of Challenge Roth 2026 and a podium finisher at the 2026 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship. Earlier provisional lists also included Chelsea Sodaro, but she is absent from the more recent field, so we are not presenting her as a current starter. There are three 2027 World Championship qualifying places per professional gender, a detail that could change how aggressively contenders race.

Panama City Beach offers the full 3.8 km swim, 180 km bike ride and 42.2 km run. Saturday’s professional start is reported at 05:40 local time; age-group athletes should follow their own official wave and transition instructions. Wind, swim conditions and pacing decisions matter much more than a glossy forecast.

Race-condition outlook (checked 5 November): a beach surf forecast predicts relatively low swell at Panama City Beach on Saturday and northerly to north-northeasterly coastal winds, varying through the day. This is a beach forecast, not a measurement along the complete cycling route or a safe-swim ruling. In a Gulf swim, navigation and swell matter; on the bike, exposed stretches may magnify wind and make even pacing difficult. Over the marathon, controlling early speed and taking nutrition reliably matter more than bravado. Ditlev, Long, Wurf, Lawrence and Siffert bring different strengths to this test, but race officials will determine safety conditions and any swim modifications.

Athens Marathon: a finish line worth the hills

The Authentic Marathon starts in Marathon and ends in Athens’ Panathenaic Stadium. Its rolling and climbing middle section has ended plenty of ambitious pacing plans. Greek contenders include Panagiotis Karaiskos, previous winner Babis Pitsolis and Stamatia (Matina) Noula, the defending women’s winner. An announced return of 20 international elite competitors gives the domestic championship a deeper dimension.

The national championship start list also names Nikolaos Stamoulis, Georgios Stamoulis, Giorgos Menis and Daphne Lavasa among athletes to follow. An athlete’s name on the entry sheet is not yet a result. For the non-professional runner, this is the race where restraint before the tough middle miles may do more good than enthusiasm at kilometre five.

The full marathon is Sunday at 08:30 Athens time, and each runner should follow the specific assigned start block. The 10K is also scheduled for Sunday; Saturday includes 5K races.

Race-day weather outlook (checked 5 November): the UK Met Office forecasts sunshine and a daytime high near 14°C in Athens, with a cooler early morning. An independent race-route model estimates roughly 10°C at the 08:30 start, climbing towards 13–14°C, with possible stronger winds and gusts. These are different forecast models, not guaranteed on-course readings. The course's initial 12 km are relatively level, the next 19 km climb in long sustained hills, and the final 11 km descend to the Panathenaic Stadium. Athletes should conserve energy on the climbs and avoid trying to regain all lost time on the descent.

Ravenna Marathon: the 2:07 man and a city of art

Ravenna’s organisers have announced Solomon Mogos Shumay of Eritrea as one of the headline male contenders, citing his 2:07:00 marathon personal best. Kenya’s Caleb Alhamis Machas (2:10:29) and Ethiopia’s Kebede Fikadu Merga (2:11:03) are among the athletes capable of putting pressure on him. The leading women named in the announcement include Slovenian Eva Bezlaj, Italians Federica Moroni, Elisa Viora and Denise Tappatà, plus Ethiopia’s Asfaw Sifen Teshome.

The Italian race offers a separate half marathon and a 10K alongside the full marathon. That matters for athletes looking up results afterwards: an event name alone is not enough to identify which distance somebody actually completed. The marathon starts Sunday at 09:15 local time.

Ravenna is a flatter and potentially quicker marathon than Athens. That makes the elite contest especially interesting: maintaining rhythm for 42.2 km, running the tangents and handling any wind across more open stretches can matter as much as climbing strength. For non-professionals, the flatter route makes an even-pacing strategy tempting, but resisting a fast opening 10 km remains sensible. Weather specifics will be added only where a dated local forecast can be verified.

From Indianapolis to the French Riviera: four more marathons, four different plans

On Saturday, the CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon starts at 08:00 local time. It is a fast-course opportunity for serious club runners and first-time marathoners alike. On Sunday, Porto starts at 08:00 from the Queimódromo; organisers publish a six-hour marathon limit and water stations every 5 km. Those are the details a runner with a race number needs, not just a preview of podium hopefuls.

Málaga’s marathon starts Sunday at 08:30 local time, with marathon and half-marathon fields requiring separate results matching. At Nice–Cannes, the first Sunday marathon wave is 08:00, with others following. Its coastal route is scenic, but changing weather and the time limit still deserve attention. Names for elite competitors at these events will be added once the current official entry lists confirm them; making up an elite field would be less useful than acknowledging the gap.

Across all these events, check the official event instructions for your start corral, collection deadline, transport, weather, aid and any changes announced in the final 48 hours. AthRecs event pages are designed to help you find your exact event and, once verified, your result.

Indianapolis and Porto offer opportunities to run efficiently without Athens-style long climbs, but wind, crowds and hydration still affect pace. Málaga's seafront setting and the Nice–Cannes coastal stretches can expose runners to shifting wind: running by effort rather than forcing every kilometre split is a practical strategy. Race maps and weather notices from the organisers take precedence over general advice, especially if rain or stronger gusts develop.

Melbourne 70.3: a different kind of Sunday morning

In St Kilda, IRONMAN 70.3 Melbourne offers 1.9 km of swimming, 90 km of cycling and a 21.1 km run. The registration page publishes a 07:30 event time on Sunday 8 November, but that is not proof of any individual competitor’s swim-wave allocation. We are holding back from naming an unverified 2026 professional lineup until the organiser publishes a usable starting list.

Age-groupers should double-check transition opening, the swim conditions, their allocated waves, the official course and cutoff requirements. A long-distance triathlon can be decided as much by logistics and nutrition as by cycling fitness.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology's forecast checked 5 November gives St Kilda a cool Sunday of approximately 9–16°C, cloudy with a slight shower chance, southerly winds around 15–25 km/h and very high ultraviolet exposure later in the day. The detailed hourly outlook places 08:00 near 11°C, feeling colder in the wind, so athletes should plan their pre-start layers and post-swim transition with care. On the bike, gusts and crosswinds can influence handling; on the run, sun protection may become relevant even if the first hour feels chilly.

Your name belongs in the story too

At AthRecs, the aim is not to stop at the professional finish line. A first marathon, a comeback run, a 70.3 personal best, or a well-earned finish after a difficult build-up deserves an accurate home in an athlete’s record. Named elite competitors link through to existing profiles or carefully distinguished newly created profiles; ordinary participants can find, claim and improve theirs as results are confirmed.

After the weekend, we will check official organiser and timing-provider results rather than guessing that someone started or finished. Athlete identities, distances, chip and gun times and PB claims are separate checks. That is how an exciting preview can become a trustworthy archive.
