About Woodford Green AC with Essex Ladies
Woodford Green AC with Essex Ladies took its present form in December 1998, when the two clubs merged. Woodford Green AC had been founded in 1908, developing from an earlier harriers section. Its green-and-white hoops reflected the nearby Epping Forest, while Ashton Playing Fields in Woodford Bridge became its post-war track home.
Essex Ladies brought a distinguished athletics history of its own. Its athletes included Dorothy Manley, the 1948 Olympic 100m silver medallist, and Sally Gunnell, whose 400m hurdles career included Olympic gold in 1992 and a world title and world record in 1993. The combined club’s published history preserves the achievements and identities of both predecessors.
