About Winchester & District AC
Winchester & District Athletic Club was founded in 1976 by John Miller, following a fundraising run by his daughter Lynda the previous year. Early athletes trained on a school grass track with limited equipment. The club later promoted the Mayor’s Marathon and Half Marathon in 1982, helping establish a wider programme of athletics in Winchester.
A major change came when the Bar End track became available in 2008, with an official opening in 2009. The facility was developed through a city council and university project, supported by fundraising from club members. The club became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation in 2018. Its history documents the volunteers and local partnerships that built the facilities used by later generations.
