About Surrey Walking Club
Surrey Walking Club was founded in 1899 to bring together competitive race walkers and people who enjoyed walking in company. Based around Surrey and the wider south-east of England, it has a sporting identity distinct from a general running club: racing and full-day country strolls have both been part of its activities from the beginning.
The club promoted the London to Brighton 52-mile walking race until the 1980s and continues to organise races and offer coaching. Its historical achievements include Olympic silver medallists G. R. Goodwin in 1924 and V. P. Nihill in 1964. Those are historical club associations, not assertions of current membership.
Country strolls provide a less competitive way to participate, with varied routes and sociable stops along the way. Interested walkers are encouraged to try a race or stroll before applying for membership. Use the public contact form and the relevant fixture instructions: the postal addresses in membership material are not a single training venue.
