About Rugby & Northampton AC
Rugby & Northampton Athletic Club was formed on 1 April 2002 by the merger of Rugby & District AC and Northampton Phoenix AC. Both brought long local histories: Rugby’s roots lay in an engineering works’ recreation club, while Northampton Phoenix had revived athletics in the town in 1972 after an earlier club closed. The merged club competes in track and field, cross-country and road running.
Members use tracks in both towns: Rugby Athletic Track beside the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Sports Centre, and Moulton College near Northampton. Coaching spans young athletes, seniors and masters, with separate running groups for different starting points. The club’s hall of fame includes masters distance runner Angela Copson and international 800m athlete Damien Moss. Joined the predecessor club in 1995 and represented Great Britain at the 2008 World Indoor Championships over 800m.
