About Portslade Hedgehoppers
Portslade Hedgehoppers formed in 1982 from a jogging group that had met at Portslade Sports Centre since the late 1970s. Norman Collingbourne helped turn it into a formal club and proposed the Hedgehoppers name. Based in Portslade, East Sussex, England, the club was involved in the formation of the West Sussex Fun Run League, whose first programme included the Hedgehopper 5 in 1983.
Members now take part in road races, cross country, trails, parkruns and longer events, alongside quizzes, meals and other social gatherings. Tuesday and Thursday evening runs use different local venues, so the live calendar is more useful than assuming every outing begins at the sports centre.
Although the club accommodates a range of paces, it does not currently cater for complete beginners: runners should be able to cover about five miles. Email the secretary to arrange a suitable first visit. The former walking section became separate from the running club in 2023.
