About Phoenix Striders
Phoenix Striders Walking and Running Club grew out of a group of women training for a five-kilometre event in 2003. After the race, helpers and runners decided to form a new club in Basildon, Essex, England. Its first committee included chair Gwyn Hughes and secretary Judy Burston; formal UK Athletics affiliation followed roughly a year later.
Running and walking remain central to the club. Tuesday and Thursday evening groups meet in Langdon Hills during summer and at Laindon Community Centre in winter. A separate Tuesday morning walk starts at Langdon Nature Discovery Park. Members enter road, cross-country, trail and endurance events, while social gatherings provide another way to get involved.
The club's history records support for Essex Wildlife Trust and children's charities, as well as a role in establishing Basildon parkrun. Prospective members can try a session and request a membership form. The published joining age is sixteen, rather than an adults-only rule.
