About Ipswich Harriers
Ipswich Harriers was founded in 1883. An early newspaper report describes a January 1884 handicap run from the Old Bell in Stoke to the Freston Boot and back, watched by crowds in the streets. The club’s headquarters later moved through several town-centre venues, including a long spell at the Coach and Horses.
Women joined in the late 1930s, and the club moved to Northgate when its synthetic track opened in 1981. Earlier milestones included the North of the Thames cross-country title in 1923 and the Eastern Counties title in 1938. The history also records a transition from friendly inter-club track meetings to league competition, with records being kept as far back as 1892.
