About Horwich R M I Harriers

Horwich RMI Harriers began in May 1924 among workers at the locomotive works in Horwich, England. Its Railway Mechanics Institute identity survives in the name, while the red vest and black shorts recall the engines and wheel trims. Membership, once restricted to railway employees, now draws runners from a wider area.

The club's history includes Northern champion and long-serving secretary Jack Prescott, British fell champion Mike Short and mountain-running world champion Martin Jones. These are historical associations, not a statement about present membership. The opening of Bolton Arena in 2001 gave the Harriers a track base alongside their established road, cross-country and fell-running activity.

Adults can choose Tuesday track work, Thursday hill efforts and more informal social groups. The junior section caters for children aged eight to sixteen, with coached sessions and competition. The Rivington Pike, Coronation Trail and Two Lads races remain prominent club events. Prospective members can use the general enquiry form to find the right group and confirm its meeting place.
