About Hercules Wimbledon AC

Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club was formed on 6 September 1967 when Hercules AC and Wimbledon AC joined forces. Hercules had started as a women’s club in Streatham in 1933, admitting men three years later. Wimbledon AC began in 1938 and re-formed in 1953 after the opening of the Wimbledon Park track.

The merged club kept something of both identities: scarlet from Hercules and yellow from Wimbledon. Early road and cross-country successes were followed by entry into the national men’s athletics league in 1971. Its history also records the work of volunteers such as David Littlewood, a longstanding treasurer and later president whose officiating career took him to three Olympic Games.
