About Fitmums and Friends
Fitmums and Friends started in Cottingham, East Yorkshire, in 2009 when Sam Barlow invited other parents to join a sociable run. Four mums came along to that first evening; the group soon welcomed people beyond its original circle and added Friends to its name. It became a registered charity in 2017 and received the King's Award for Voluntary Service in 2024.
Today its local groups offer running and walking at different distances and paces, using a regrouping system called shepherding so faster participants loop back rather than leaving others behind. The wider programme includes junior athletics, cycling, family sessions and bereavement and sight-loss activities. You do not need to be a mum to join. Newcomers can register for trial sessions and choose a local group; activities and booking requirements vary by location, so the Beverley listing is only one part of the Yorkshire network.
