About Elswick Harriers
Elswick Harriers began in 1889 and has trained from Newburn Activity Centre since 1994. Its history links Newcastle club running to Olympians Alex Burns, Alan Lillington and Mike McLeod, whose career included 10,000m silver at Los Angeles in 1984. Norman Woodcock's work helped sustain the club through difficult years, and the relays bearing his name remain part of its race programme alongside the Good Friday Relays and Newburn River Run.
The Newburn base gives runners access to roads, paths and cross-country terrain around the Tyne Riverside Country Park. Senior groups range from beginners to experienced competitors, with a gradual None to Run programme for people starting out. Juniors have their own section, and newcomers can request a buddy to help them settle in. Tuesday and Thursday evenings are the main club nights; let the club know you are coming so it can direct you to the right group.
