About Durham University Athletics & Cross Country Club

Durham University Athletics & Cross Country Club brings together student athletes in Durham, England, from newcomers to university championship competitors. The university’s programme covers sprints, distance running and jumps at its Maiden Castle sport and wellbeing facilities, with throws and pole vault provision also using Gateshead International Stadium.

Competition includes BUCS indoor and outdoor athletics, BUCS cross-country and the Steel Cup. Some university athletes also compete for Durham City Harriers, a separate local club, linking student athletics with the wider sporting community.

Max and Julie Coleby shaped the club’s coaching over more than two decades. A university announcement in November 2024 recorded their retirement that June and their appointment as honorary presidents. They are therefore presented here as former coaches, rather than assumed current session leaders. Students interested in joining should contact the club through its official channels for the current groups and timetable, since parts of the university’s published sports information retain earlier-season details.
