About Derwentside AC
Derwentside Athletic Club serves Stanley and the surrounding County Durham area in England. It has three strands: senior running, junior athletics and an Ability Group for children and young adults who are neurodivergent or have physical or learning disabilities.
North Durham Academy is the training base, with the community entrance reached from Slaidburn Road. Seniors run in pace groups on Tuesdays and Thursdays and can enter road, cross-country and relay competitions. Junior sessions develop running, jumping and throwing skills, with summer track-and-field opportunities and winter cross-country and Sportshall competition.
The Ability Group uses the sports hall and, in suitable summer weather, the school field. Parents are encouraged to stay and meet other families. Prospective members should email the club or use its Facebook page before a first visit so coaches can welcome them into the appropriate group. The club also organises the Hellhole five-mile trail race and its own handicap and Grand Prix competitions.
