About Derby Athletic Club

Derby Athletic Club is based at Moorways Stadium in Derby, England. Its history reaches back to Derby & County Athletic Club, formed in 1887 after members of a church group began cross-country running. The club’s account also records the formation of a women’s athletics club in 1949 and the building of the Moorways clubhouse in 1989.

Training spans sprints, endurance running, jumps, throws and combined events, with road and cross-country work alongside the track programme. The club’s historical associations include long jumper Fiona May and Olympic distance runners Arthur Keily and Mike Bullivant. Javelin thrower Karen Martin is also recognised in its history.

Athletes should arrange a trial with the membership officers so they can meet the appropriate coach. The junior induction programme introduces children to different events before specialisation, but its waiting list was closed when checked in October 2026. Older training groups have separate joining arrangements. Members are expected to support club competition, and volunteers help with coaching, officiating and running the clubhouse.
