About Castle Point Joggers
Castle Point Joggers grew from Sunday runs advertised by Alan Perkins in 1975. Perkins and fellow athletes Stan Cox, Mary Green and Andy Green wanted to share running for fitness and enjoyment. The Essex club’s early meeting place was Runnymede sports centre; today its Tuesday club night is based at Hadleigh & Thundersley Cricket Club in Hadleigh, England.
Its founders brought considerable experience. Mary Green, née Tagg, represented Great Britain over 400 metres at the 1968 Olympics, while Stan Cox competed at the 1948 and 1952 Games. These are historical connections to the club’s beginnings, rather than current membership claims.
The weekly programme includes Monday and Thursday intervals, Tuesday club runs, Saturday parkrun and Sunday longer outings. Castle Point also has a young-runners section and organises the Hadleigh Legacy 10K. Prospective members can arrange a month’s trial through the club secretary. Post-run refreshments, social evenings and trips are part of the membership offer.
