About Calder Valley Fell Runners

Calder Valley Fell Runners was formed on 26 October 1986 by runners who wanted a club devoted to the fells. The founding meeting took place at the Stafford Arms in Halifax, with Mytholmroyd chosen as the club’s base. Its distinctive red-and-white striped vest was intended to be easy to spot on the hills. An early milestone was the club’s Pennine Way relay record in June 1992.

Tuesday pack runs leave Mytholmroyd Community Centre at 6.45pm, with groups arranged by pace, distance and terrain. Newcomers to those runs should be comfortable covering about five miles or eight kilometres. The club also offers Taste of the Fells sessions for people building confidence, maintains a junior section and supports local mountain rescue through donations.

Club competitions range from short fell races to ultra-distance challenges. Its history includes runners such as Holly Page, Anne Johnson and Dougie Zinis, alongside the many members who support big mountain rounds. A detailed 2022 club account describes Zinis’s double Bob Graham Round in 2021 and the shared training and support behind it. These historical accounts sit alongside a continuing calendar of races, route recces and volunteer-led club activities.
