About Burnham On Sea Harriers
Burnham-on-Sea Harriers began in September 1981 after Graham Slocombe and Brian Beale met at a fun run in East Huntspill. The Somerset club, in England, grew around local road and cross-country running. It first promoted the Burnham Half Marathon in 1985 and resumed organising it in 2006 after a break; the Brent Knoll race is another longstanding club event.
Tuesday evening runs normally start at the Bay Centre in Cassis Close, with groups covering different distances and paces and a regular speed session. Summer outings can take runners onto beaches, trails and nearby hills, while some sessions start away from the usual base. Members receive updates through Spond, and the club provides a core volunteer team for Burnham and Highbridge parkrun, which it helped launch in June 2015.
New runners can attend a Tuesday session before applying for membership online. Public enquiries go to the club mailbox, with a separate welfare address. The club's history recognises founder Brian Beale's service to Somerset athletics and Arthur Gilbert MBE's charity work through running and triathlon, including his participation in the 2012 Olympic torch relay.
