About Bristol and West AC

Bristol & West Athletic Club began in 1882 as South Bristol Harriers and took the Bristol Athletic Club name in 1897. A merger with Bristol South Harriers followed in 1957. The present name dates from 2004, reflecting a commitment to athletes across the wider West Country as well as Bristol itself.

The club’s history spans track and field and distance running, including its part in staging the 2002 National Cross Country Championships at Ashton Court. Whitehall Athletics Arena became its base following the move from Whitchurch in 2011. Earlier generations include Mary Rand, who competed as Mary Bignal for predecessor club Bristol South Harriers, and senior Great Britain international Jo Pavey.
