About Blaydon Harrier & AC
Blaydon Harriers first formed in 1908 and remained active until 1952. The club was re-established in October 1963, taking up training facilities at the former Blaydon Grammar School site, now Blaydon Leisure Centre. Its history in Blaydon, Tyne and Wear, England, includes Olympic representatives Kirstie Wade and Jill Hunter.
The club combines road and cross-country running with track and field. It also organises the Blaydon Race, created in 1981 by Dr James Dewar and held on 9 June along the Newcastle-to-Blaydon route associated with the local song. Regular coaching includes senior endurance, junior endurance, hurdles, throws and an introductory group for nine- and ten-year-olds.
Adults can apply for a four-week taster through the membership form. The junior induction and endurance waiting lists are currently closed; hurdles retains a waiting list, which the club warns may exceed six months. Most sessions use Blaydon Leisure Centre, while throws coaching takes place at Gateshead Stadium. Check the relevant group before attending.
