About Barnsley Athletic Club

Barnsley Athletic Club serves Barnsley and the surrounding South Yorkshire area in England. The present club emerged in the late 1980s from the merger of Barnsley Road Runners and Dorothy Hyman Athletic Club. Its road-running predecessor had started in 1974, with Dave Bennett, Johnny Kennedy and Paul Midwood named in the club’s history as its founders.

Today its programme spans track and field, road running and cross-country. Track athletes train at Dorothy Hyman Sports Centre in Cudworth, while road-running sessions use the Barnsley Metrodome as a meeting point. The club’s event programme has included the Barnsley 10K, Ward Green 6, Spencers Dash and a winter track series.

Young athletes can join from age eight, with Tuesday and Thursday sessions described on the junior information page. Families should contact the club before attending to discuss availability, training expectations and the separate track charge. Membership, general enquiries and track questions have distinct role email addresses. Barnsley Athletic Club and Barnsley Harriers are separate organisations with different training bases.
