About Barking Road Runners
Barking Road Runners began on 3 June 1984, when eighteen people met in Barking Park to jog and walk together. Based in Barking, East London, England, the club grew through local racing, social outings and volunteering. Its history records running a London Marathon water station from 1987 and helping establish Barking parkrun in 2012.
The club’s August Bank Holiday race developed from an early Barking Park event. It was renamed the Phipps 5K in 2021 in memory of former member Owen Phipps, who died in 2019. Dagenham 88 Runners, formed after a split in 1988, remains a separate club; a proposed merger was rejected in 2000.
Prospective members are invited to try a few sessions before completing the joining form. The club provides a separate process for under-eighteens and expects a parent or carer to attend with them. Its contact form is the public enquiry route for current training arrangements, membership questions and finding a suitable first session.
