Biography

Winnifred ‘Winnie’ Frances Roach-Leuszler was a Canadian distance swimmer whose career extended into coaching and swimming instruction. Born in Port Credit, Ontario, she began swimming as a small child and earned an early long-distance medal at nine. She trained with the Maple Leaf Swim Club and continued competing while serving in the Canadian Women’s Corps during the Second World War.

Her English Channel crossing came in the 1951 Daily Mail race. Solo Swims of Ontario records 16 August and a France-to-England time of 13 hours 25 minutes, matching the CSA’s individual entry under Winnie Roach. Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame recognises her as the first Canadian to complete the Channel. Dover Museum places her seventh in its race finishing order.

A family-contributed account describes the crossing as her first attempt and preserves photographs of the escort operation, including the accompanying boat Persever. Her contribution to swimming continued beyond endurance competition. She organised learn-to-swim programmes, worked with aquatic clubs and taught children and adults. Later recognition included the Canadian Forces Sports Hall of Fame, Swim Ontario’s Hall of Fame and the Order of Ontario. Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame inducted her in 2015, after her death in 2004.
