Biography

Martín Fiz is a Spanish distance runner and the 1994 European and 1995 world marathon champion. He won world marathon silver in 1997 and represented Spain at three Olympic Games: the 5,000 metres at Barcelona 1992, fourth place in the marathon at Atlanta 1996, and sixth in the marathon at Sydney 2000.

His career spans track, cross-country and road running. His recorded bests include 13:20.01 for 5,000 metres, 27:49.61 for 10,000 metres, 1:01:08 for the half marathon and 2:08:05 for the marathon, the latter set when winning at Otsu in 1997. His championship and road record includes marathon victories at Rotterdam, Kyongju and Lake Biwa, alongside national and international track and cross-country appearances.

Fiz continued competing as a masters athlete, completing age-group victories at all six of the then-established World Marathon Majors by 2018. In 2025 he completed the six-race SuperHalfs challenge with another age-group victory in Valencia.

He has announced the New York City Marathon on 1 November 2026 as his 42nd and final marathon, to be run alongside his son Álex on Álex’s marathon debut. His wife Ana Churruca is also entered. The published race history is a documented selection and is not a claim that every career start has been recovered.
