Biography

Henry Sullivan was an American endurance swimmer from Lowell, Massachusetts, whose Channel ambitions stretched across a decade. He first attempted the crossing in 1913. Another planned attempt was interrupted in August 1914 when the outbreak of war forced him to return to the United States, and further unsuccessful swims followed in 1920 and 1921.

On 5–6 August 1923 he finally reached France from England, becoming the third successful Channel swimmer and the first American. He left Shakespeare Cliff and landed on the Calais sands, accompanied by the Folkestone lugger Day Spring and two Dover rowing boats. The Channel record and contemporary reports published on 7 August give 26 hours and 50 minutes. A later Associated Press report gives 27 hours and 25 minutes, so the historical discrepancy remains alongside the record.

Sullivan’s achievement brought the Alexander Channel Swimming Cup and a £1,000 newspaper prize. His trophy’s inscription commemorates the dates, route and breaststroke endurance performance, preserving unusually direct material evidence of an early Channel success.

After reaching France, Sullivan told a reporter that he wanted sleep and had asked for ice cream on finishing. The Daily Sketch awarded its £1,000 prize despite the absence of its representative from the escort boat, recognising the completed crossing.
