Ciara Mageean

Ciara Mageean (1992–2026) was an Irish middle-distance runner from Portaferry, County Down, and a member of City of Lisburn AC. A European 1500m champion, she represented Ireland at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games.

Her international breakthrough came with 800m silver at the 2009 World Youth Championships, followed by 1500m silver at the 2010 World Junior Championships and the 2011 European Junior Championships. Senior European 1500m bronze in Amsterdam in 2016 and silver in Munich in 2022 preceded her gold medal in Rome on 9 June 2024, where she won in 4:04.66. She also earned European indoor bronze in Glasgow in 2019 and Commonwealth silver in Birmingham in 2022.

Mageean won the 2022 Brussels Diamond League 1500m in 3:56.63, breaking four minutes for the first time and lowering Sonia O’Sullivan’s longstanding Irish record. She went on to finish fourth at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest and improved her 1500m best to 3:55.87 in Brussels that September. Her PBs also included 1:58.51 for 800m, 2:31.06 for 1000m and 4:14.58 for the mile, each recognised as an Irish record.

Selected for Paris 2024, Mageean withdrew before competing because of an Achilles injury. Her influence beyond elite racing was celebrated at Morton Stadium in July 2026, when more than 400 young athletes joined her for Run with Ciara. She is remembered for a career that combined international medals, national records and a lasting connection with Ireland’s athletics community.
