Getting started in Aichi
Ayu Koyama is a Japanese middle-distance runner from Aichi who races for Iwatani Corporation. She got her start when someone invited her to a summer athletics club at primary school. By August 2021 she could run 800m in 2:06.83. She joined Iwatani in 2022 after attending Anjo Gakuen High School.
From 1500m to 5000m
Koyama has raced across a much wider range since. In May 2025 she ran 4:23.04 for 1500m at Tokyo’s Seiko Golden Grand Prix. In July 2026 she raced 1500m in Kitami, 3000m in Fukagawa and 5000m in Shibetsu in the space of eight days. The last race brought a best of 16:18.52. In September she lowered her 1500m best to 4:14.62 at the Japan Corporate Teams Championships in Kyoto. She ran the second leg of Iwatani’s Asian-record 4×1500m team in Hiratsuka on 1 November.
