Biography
From Kyoto to international 800m competition
Ayano Shiomi is a Japanese middle-distance runner from Kyoto who races for Iwatani Corporation. Her two older brothers drew her into athletics. After Ritsumeikan University she joined Iwatani in 2022, already a World Relays medallist from the mixed 2×2×400m in Yokohama in 2019. In 2023 she won Asian indoor silver over 800m and finished fifth outdoors at the Asian Championships in Bangkok. She was fifth in the same outdoor event in Gumi two years later.
Iwatani’s lead-off runner
Shiomi ran her fastest 800m, 2:01.01, in Fribourg in August 2025. At the 2026 Japanese Championships in Nagoya she took silver in 2:01.67, improving on her winning heat time by fifteen hundredths. She stretched out to 1500m that summer, running 4:11.12 in Fukagawa. On 1 November she led off for Iwatani in Hiratsuka, where the quartet set an Asian 4×1500m record of 17:20.12.
